Blog #3- Hundreds feared dead Sumatran quake

Main Idea: After a devastating earthquake in Sumatra, more than 1000 people are feared to be dead or trapped in the rubble.

Authors Purpose: To inform the world of the tragedy taking place in Indonesia.

Details:
- Only 75 deaths have been confirmed
- As of now there is no electricity
- There have been reports of fire burnings
- the roads are cut off by a landslide
- This earthquake is being compared to the quake in 2006 in Yogyakarta
* left 36,000 people injured
* left 1.5 million people homeless
- Reports that at least 80 students are trapped in one building


Summary: The earthquake in Sumatra has taken the world by shock. The people who live there have our sympathy, and our prayers. The way this article is written it seems as no life form is well enough to try and get to a phone. Seeing that technology is such a huge part of life the world is waiting for a call or even an e-mail to find out how may have died. Due to the fact that roads are closed to enter Sumatra, health officials and safety crews have been unsuccessful to go in and help.

Blog #2- Rain Put Georgia Areas Under Water

Main Idea: For the past couple days rain had been pouring down very hard in Georgia, causing the government to declare a state of emergency. When the situation gets this far out of control there is very little that can be done.

Authors purpose: Browns purpose is to inform the public of the serious impact a storm can have on a society.

Details: In just two days 15-20 inches of rain fell in Georgia
- Seven people have died
- The sewage plant flooded and was spewing sewage into the Chattahoochee River
- 17 major bridges are closed down
- The waters flooded both rural and urban areas
- Trisha Palmer (a meteorologist) said the flooding is far worse then the hurricane level damage in 2005


Summary: Rain has been coming down in Georgia since Monday. Although the storms are not biocidal the damage it is causing is serious. Lives have been lost, and many homes destroyed. The Chattahoochee River flooded 12 feet over its normal flood stage level. Rescue crews are spending too much time taking care of little emergencies for the simple fact that people are not be careful of where they drive or park their cars. People are being warned not to return to flooded areas, and to avoid driving through any water. These storms has turned a once utopia into a dystopia.

Blog #1- Fighting Flu Without Big Gun

Main Idea: The u.s goverment is worried that thousands of people will fall ill with H1N1 virus before a new vaccine is avaliable in October. A campaign to urge Americans to get vaccinated for bothe seasonal and H1N1 flu is in work.

Authors purpose: The authors purpose is to inform the public of the health risks and the steps being taken to prevent further illness.

Details: -Americans are being urged to take action to slow the spreading of the disease
- An emphasis on washing hands and sneezing/coughing in the bend of your arm is being asked of students.
- 25,000 students were sent home due to flu symptoms in just the first week of school.
- Administration is being cautious to not mislead the public like they did
with the victims of hurricane Katrina


Summary: Health officials are afraid thousands of people will become ill with the H1N1 virus before a new vaccination is available. Officials are pleading for all schools to stay open, but also that students take extra precautions. The administration is trying to get the urgency of good hygiene across by appealing to the different age groups using mass media products. Health officials are doing their best not to make the public worry unless its completely necessary.
